SWEENEY BODS ON BURLINGTONS
Hullo Style Mongers, Look who I bowled into on Burlington Street the other week- Its only Thom & Luke off of Thom Sweeney, top ranking bespoke tailors and modern outfitters about town (click). Defo’ suggest checking out their recently geared up website and latest ready-to-wear contemporary causal. But thats not the story, oh no.
Love these boys, and known them for a decade now. Seems like yesterday was doing the debut piece with them in The FT How To Spend It (clicky) all about five new tailoring offers from the then burgeoning contemporary sartorial scene. Looking back several things strike me.
1- How hot & young do Thom & Luke look, yeah? Further more look how their house aesthetic hasn’t really dated in a decade. Drop the pocket-douche, gone DB/Peaky but the ethos & blend remain- big ups.
2 - Cant believe I opened piece with an Oscar Wilde quote. What a pompous pillock? Don’t even pretend to read books anymore. Spot-on quote mind, from An Ideal Husband. “Nothing is so dangerous as being too modern. One is apt to grow old-fashioned quite suddenly” declared Lady Markby, appazza bang on the money.
3- Its interesting who’s made it through from that lot, and attests to how bloody hard this menswear game is. From that story currently residing in the “where are they now” file (click) are…The Rake- such a great brand that simmered with important wearable style for many seasons but alas now gone gone. That tall, chic Roland Mouret fella (also does dresses) who sacked off menswear off pretty damn quick after launching (though did totally furnish that tall, chic Daniel Marks fella’s smart wardrobe in process). Then there was Hayward 2.0, which never effectively got out it's spanking-new marble starting blocks. The exception bar Sweeney is even taller and partially complex Sauvage, who is also still going (click). He’s in Los Angeles doing all sorts, tailoring for basketball players, while doing undercover sartorial stuff in Ghana on the side. Back to the matter..
Thom Whiddett & Luke Sweeney have thrived right here in actual Mayfair. The boys have made some of the finest suits I have ever worn- Their fabric counsel is second to none and their cut deftly flattering, dynamic and understated. Industriously grafting from their corner gaff on Weighhouse, I vouch for their sartorial vision from ten years of liaison dressing my boys in film, music and telly. They all still rave ‘bout the Sweeney fellas and their work.
Then there’s reporting on numerous savvy contributions to the modern RTW retail canon, largely out of their New England style emporia on Bruton Place. Not even gonna mention their success in NYC. This is all double big modern stuff, not to be sniffed at.
Well, now something super signsnifficant is about to happen. Thing is, I cant say much for ‘political reasons’ these week. A media Um Bongo no less. Even though I got form for breaking those things (click) have been experimenting with Da Da-esque Tourettes form copy during Cov-Lockers so gonna give that a whirl below. To those that want more, please D.M. me, and can negotiate sharing scans of the notes taken during visit to the building site that I currently cannot officially confirm could be a new four floor Town House space, at 24 Burlington Street, East-Mayfair. Roger that? I don’t wanna rub the Sweeney boy up the wrong way so will take Regans advice from back in the day and “SHUT IT!” (click).
Stubbs out.
