No.1 THE SMEDLEY ‘LORCA’
Look Hook No.1 - John Smedley Lorca round neck knits. I witnessed a proper menswear coup unveiled at Pitti in January; A quiet, important one. Brit-knit brand John Smedley showed their new round neck Sea Island knitted tee- The Lorca (click). Big deal? Yes, as me & many of the men I ‘style’ swear by the previous Smeders offering, the Belden (clicky), but none were completely happy with neck- width is a trifle boaty, hem a little puny. Unflattering necks make the middle-aged among us look middle-aged, heaven forbid. Now the Lorca offers neck-hag support.
It’s all about the necks. Well-honed, neat, not snug, and right level of substantial. Shout out The Smedley Massive for consciousness of vacant slot for knits to go with the high-waist trend. That’s partly why they’ve done it. A polo version, the Mycrof (clicky-wicky), is fine but its the round the counts (polo format is more a ‘golf club’ motif for us ). ‘We’ are gonna wear them with high hoisted-trews and under suiting styled in the modern fashion.
“The Lorca has welted hems & cuffs- for streamlined look” the minister for John Smedley told me, but critically its not Terry-tight-top style. This firm have been in the knit game it since Pontius was a Pilot so if follows they spotted a lack of (affordable) fully fashioned welt tees. The Lorca is slightly sportier, and in their lightweight breathable Sea Island Cotton its sustainable. Material is fractionally sheer, not solid, in positive way, and currently comes in four colours: black and midnight being the serious ones. So, stop eating ice-cream for just one moment and give the Lorca a whirl.
Stubbs out.
